Interview with an Interior Designer
To gain a better understanding of what interior designers do, we interviewed Maria Smith, an experienced interior designer who has been working in the field for over 10 years. Here’s what she had to say.
Maria explained that her day-to-day responsibilities involve meeting with clients to discuss their needs and budget; researching materials, colors, and furniture; creating sketches and design plans; and communicating with contractors and other professionals involved in the project. She also noted that she often has to manage multiple projects at once, which can be challenging but ultimately rewarding.
When asked about the biggest challenge she faces as an interior designer, Maria said it was staying up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies. She explained that the industry is constantly evolving, so it’s important to stay on top of new developments and incorporate them into her designs.
Finally, Maria offered some advice for aspiring interior designers: “Be creative, stay organized, and never stop learning. Interior design is an ever-changing field, so it’s important to stay ahead of the curve. Also, don’t be afraid to take risks and push yourself out of your comfort zone.”
Examining a Professional Portfolio
To get a better idea of what goes into interior design, we took a look at Maria’s professional portfolio. It included a variety of projects, ranging from residential homes to commercial spaces. Each project was unique, but all featured Maria’s signature style: a combination of contemporary and traditional elements with a focus on functionality and comfort.
We noticed that Maria had designed kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, living rooms, offices, and outdoor spaces. She had also worked on smaller projects, such as furniture selection and window treatments.
The portfolio also showcased some of Maria’s “before and after” photos. These photos illustrated the transformation that had taken place in each space, and highlighted the impact of her work. It was clear that Maria had a knack for creating beautiful, functional, and inviting spaces.
Exploring Different Design Styles
When it comes to interior design, there are many different styles to choose from. Maria explained that she likes to mix and match different elements to create a unique look. For example, she might combine traditional and modern elements, or use a minimalist approach for one room and an eclectic approach for another.
She also noted that some of her clients prefer a specific design style, while others want her to come up with something completely unique. In either case, Maria is able to tailor her designs to meet her clients’ needs and preferences.
Tools and Technologies Used by Interior Designers
Interior designers rely on a variety of tools and technologies to bring their visions to life. Maria mentioned that she uses computer aided design (CAD) programs to create design plans and 3D modeling software to visualize her ideas. She also utilizes virtual reality technology to give her clients a realistic preview of their completed project.
In addition to these tools, Maria explained that she often visits showrooms and fabric stores to view samples of materials and furniture. This helps her to get a better understanding of the products available and make sure that her designs are in line with her clients’ budget.
Showcasing Different Projects
To wrap up our conversation, Maria showed us some of the projects she had worked on over the years. She discussed the goals of each client and how she was able to bring their vision to life. She also pointed out the changes she made, such as adding color accents or rearranging furniture, and analyzed the results.
It was amazing to see the transformation that had taken place in each space. The before and after photos were especially impressive, and it was clear that Maria had done an excellent job of creating inviting and comfortable environments for her clients.

There is something very important in our work as interior designer that I think I did not find here – that one of our primary tasks is to make the interiors most comfortable by creating the possible layout which corresponds with our clients’ way of living (working). And only after that make the most of available space, budget, etc. We only have to be able to offer the latest trends, materials and innovations, but even aesthetically the final decision is that of the clients.
